Bossuet and Hegel as readers of Polybius: reflections on the historiography of modernity and the end of Fortuna

In this article, we re-examine the oft-assumed link between theories of modernity and “death fortune”. It is often argued that recourse to “fortune” as a legitimate cause events had declined substantially by end seventeenth century, replaced aetiologies based on calculation probabilities inspired techniques new science. Focusing reception Greek historian Hellenistic period, Polybius, in whose Histories tyche appears notorious variety roles, argue fortune was subtly replaced, but not drastically assumed, number influential figures development modern historiography, particular, Bossuet (1627–1704) Hegel (1770–1831).
